Participation in the Royal Canin Public Drop-Off Program Offers Businesses & Organizations an Opportunity to Showcase their Commitment to Sustainability in their Community

TRENTON, N.J., October 25, 2022 – Today, Royal Canin, a global leader in pet health nutrition, and international recycling leader TerraCycle, shared an expansion of the Royal Canin Free Recycling Program and invite pet businesses and organizations to become public drop-off locations for the program. The companies are calling on local animal and pet supply retailers, veterinary clinics, hospitals and schools to help the planet and their communities in keeping unrecyclable pet food packaging out of landfills and incinerators.

“Pet food packaging is an overlooked waste stream, often ending up in landfills and waterways across the country,” said Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle. “With the Royal Canin Free Recycling Program, businesses and organizations located nationally have the unique opportunity to be sustainable community hubs by offering local pet parents an easy way to provide the animals in their lives nutritionally, without the guilt over the waste the food packaging produces.”

Pet food packaging usually consists of multiple materials, in most cases aluminum and plastic, which excludes it from curbside recycling. According to the Pet Sustainability Coalition, an estimated 300 million pounds of pet food and treat bags are generated in the U.S. every year, and over 99 percent of those bags are not recycled. Through the Royal Canin Free Recycling Program, consumers are invited to bring Royal Canin pet food packaging to participating public drop-off points to be recycled.

“We are very conscious of how our packaging can impact the planet, which is why we are proud to be a part of such an important initiative,” said Racquel White, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Royal Canin. “We are constantly looking at ways to reduce waste and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with TerraCycle to help provide communities with sustainable alternatives.”

The companies encourage animal and pet supply retailers, veterinary clinics, hospitals and schools to become collection points and become sustainability leaders in their community. By doing this, organizations can provide residents with the possibility of diverting a prominent waste stream from landfills across the country while recycling material into new everyday products while giving. Every shipment of packaging sent to TerraCycle also earns collector points that can be used for charitable gifts or converted to cash and donated to a non-profit, school or charitable organization of their choice.
