Super Senior Salem Seriously Satisfied!

My very senior cat Salem has struggled with having regular BMs for as long as I can recall! And while they’re not 100% normal - to be able to treat it with a diet that also helps kidneys is VITAL. This product is the only 1 of its kind and I’m surprised other manufacturers have not jumped on the “multi-function” for diets. I should not have to alienate one concern for another when both of which are important! I’ve tried all the leading digestive / sensitive vet diets and this is the ONLY ONE that seemed to make any impact on his quality of life in an effective way. You’re probably reading this review because You are like me and want to know the results “does it work?!” - and I don’t think it’s too much information when I say we went from constant diarrhea to “slightly formed” and a dramatic decrease in odor. I really think the key here is the hydrolyzed protein, I had an RX for RC’s gastrointestinal line and that didn’t particularly help Salem (not that it isn’t good, just not his issue) and I’m still just shocked that after all these years that only this line actually DID SOMETHING! (And I say that having tried Fortiflora, VetRx Clay, Vetoquinol pectin, pumpkin & handful of other anti-diarrheal OTC & metronidazole & steroids— yes we’ve tried IT ALL) And if you’re worried about a veterinary diet being tasty, I did not have that problem & Salem is a little bit picky. When I introduced this diet, he was slightly underweight, and his appetite concerned me But with this food, he eats it happily, and never really searches for treats or extra, which I am shocked about It seems to be satisfying him fully. The only issue, And why I gave this review 4 and not 5 stars is because there is no wet food supplement for this line. And I will never make the mistake of thinking that a little bit of fancy feast couldn’t hurt since my other cat can have whatever and I thought maybe he was feeling like he was missing out but I learned pretty quickly that even the slightest change or disruption of the hydrolyzed protein got us right back with his foul smelling diarrhea. If you are prescribed this diet, you cannot deviate from it and it alone!! That being said I am making a serious plea to Royal Canin to PLEASE PRODUCE A CANNED WET LOAF PATE OPTION!!! I am begging you!! I think it’s very unfortunate that such a very specific and sensitive diet that if cats are on it, they really need it and I don’t like feeling that I am not providing him with full and complete nutrition when I can’t supplement a wet food option for additional moisture (Especially the kidney factor which needs moisture!) as most cat owners know many studies are saying that wet food and closer to raw is the right way but people like me and Salem have no option like that due to his sensitivities. Other prescription diets that I would argue could slightly deviate to treats now and then that are not within the diet plan have a wet food option, and I’m just really punched in the gut that there is no canned of this line. And I’ve tried watering the dry food which you can do and may work for some but it’s just not the same. But please don’t let that stop you from trying this if you were like me and have tried everything else. I am so so grateful that I found something to get him some normalcy, especially in his later years. Even though I was warned, there is no wet food. I still followed through anyway because I needed to find an answer and I think this is as close as I’m gonna get and I’m probably the only one really upset about the wet food since Salem doesn’t seem to terribly miss it but beyond the occasional tantrum lol I don’t really really write reviews for things but I work in customer service and also in a pet / vet support industry And I know that when people have experiences like mine, they need to tell their stories to help others in the same boat. I wish I’d found this sooner and hopefully my review will inspire you to try this and I hope it works for you! If it doesn’t, I’m saying this now: hydrolyzed is the key to digestion! And thank you Royal Canin for giving a multi function support option. ❤️ This really made me a brand believer as I have now switched my very heavy cat to the Satiety Support and he loves it! I mean it when I say this, I am very objective, and do way too much research when I am looking for products, especially when they’re related to my pets care, and I went through the gambit of all the biggest and supposedly most beneficial cat foods that are on the market And I still choose Royal Canin with confidence because of these niche dietary support lines. Can’t argue with RESULTS!

Good food, no so great experience

Royal canin is always going out of stock and on back order. My cat requires the hydrolyzed protein and renal support and I always have to find another type of royal canin he can eat. Overall not a great experience since no one else makes the same food and Roy canin has a monopoly.
Royal Canin response
I am very sorry to hear that. At this time the veterinarian exclusive products, such as the multi-functions, are only purchasable from a veterinary clinic.

Great if you can find it

I know you have to go through vets RC, but even they haven't been able to get their hands on it for months and I must ask WHY? It's really unfortunate that Royal Canin seems to be the only diet of this kind and is failing to meet demand. If I had no issues with supply, my only other complaint would be not offering a wet option. My cat loves this, but he is almost toothless, so eating it takes work.

Best thing for my cat; even my vet can't get a bag

Really frustrating to see the cut-and-paste replies from Royal Canin about how the product hasn't been discontinued, but that it's only available from veterinary clinics. Considering that my vet, nearby vet clinics, and a major university's emergency hospital cannot get a bag of it anywhere, I'm calling your bluff, Royal Canin. This is the product that will help both my cats the most, and better yet, they actually really like it, and no one can find it. The only reason I have a little bit of it is because the emergency vet had an already-opened bag from the owner of a previous patient who had passed away. I don't know what I'm going to do when we run out, which is getting close. I had been using it a few years ago for my one cat, but it was so hard to get that we switched to another Royal Canin product. But now my other cat has chronic pancreatitis, chronic IBS, and early stage renal disease, and the doctor said that the food IS the medicine. But I can't get his "medicine," and I don't know what to do. So please don't give a canned reply about how it hasn't been discontinued when you've had so many reviews about how no one (including vet clinics and hospitals) can find it anywhere.

My Cat Tells Me It Is Time To Eat

My cat does so well on this dry food. He is a diabetic and has chronic Pancreatitis. His blood sugars on this food run low with having to give him a half unit of insulin. Now the food is on back order and the sugars have spiked so high, I am afraid he is going into a diabetic crisis. He loves this food too!! He always comes at his feeding time to tell me he is hungry, starting a half hour to 15 minutes before. I feel helpless without it.

Cat loves it....impossible to find.

My cat needs this food for her IBD and CKD. It is the one food she will eat but there is not one bag available in the continental US. Royal Canin needs to do better in their distribution of veterinary food.

Hard to Get

Why is this food so hard to keep in stock? Our senior kitty is very happy with it, and needs the multi-function support. Can you please make this more consistently?!

Agree this product is INTENTIONALLY undersupplied

I agree with a previous reviewer that this unique product is intentionally undersupplied, often unavailable, and RoyalCanin is able to price gouge. I've contacted my Senators and Representative about my concerns.

Great food, but difficult when out of stock

It's great to have a renal and hydrolyzed diet available for my cat that he actually likes. Because of his food allergies he's unable to eat regular, prescription renal food and having an option that addresses both has been fantastic. And having him like it is even better! However, my vet and my vet's supplier have been out of stock for awhile now which has left me scrambling trying to figure out what to do. With a product so niche, I wish priority would be given to making sure it stays in stock.
