What happened to this product and why did you change the formula? 8/9 months ago it was perfect. My Pom absolutely loved it. Then all of qa sudden about 3 1/2 months ago or so, the consistency changed - it went from having a firm paté texture to mush. He immediately got loose stools and diarrhea. I thought it was a faulty batch but when I did some research, I found out the formula had changed. Now he has on two different days after eating it. Why change it if it was a good product? I won't be buying it anymore and will speak to my vet to stop recommending it as well as suggest to Chewy to stop carrying it as so many people are having issues. I'd like a simple answer: why did RC change the formula?

I just spoke with a Royal Canin rep and confirmed that both the wet and dry formulas were changed without any notification or label changes. According to her, the wet/loaf has always been pork and still is. The dry was chicken meal, but they have added pork and pea protein now. The fiber has definitely increased. She claimed that the change was minor, but as many reviews have said, this change has led to serious consequences for the already compromised dogs who rely on it. The thing that makes me the most angry is that there is ZERO accountability on RC's part for making owners aware of these changes. When I asked why the label wasn't changed, she told me that RC believes that the onus is on the vets and suppliers (e.g. Chewy) to let owners/patients know about the change. Seriously??? To me, NOT advertising the change says that the changes made were to cheapen an already incredibly expensive product. Otherwise, you would be screaming from the rooftops about how great the changes are and justifying why your prices have increased. Royal Canin has left owners with sick dogs hanging, as they are the only food (that I can find) to treat dogs with life-threatening pancreatitis. Shame on them for being so sneaky and not caring about the health of the animals THEY serve. I will NEVER support this company again for being so deceptive and irresponsible.

Our two-year-old chihuahua was very happy with the Gastrointestinal Low Fat food, until the latest batch. Now, as soon as we offer it to her, she runs away. We knew right away that the formula had changed -- among other things, the consistency is much more watery. Comparison of the labels shows that the ingredients and nutrition have changed, including a big increase in fiber. We would gladly pay extra if we could get the old version. Please bring it back. If you, Royal Canin, really think the new version is better in some way, why not sell it as a new variety under another name, and let the people (and their pets) choose the one they prefer?

My little 10 yr old Yorkie was diagnosed with, and hospitalized for, severe pancreatitis a couple of months ago. He was put on the RC Gastro Low Fat Loaf as his exclusive diet and Was doing well Until the formula changed. The new formula is mushy soft, wet and does not smell good. Last Saturday, on his first can of New formula, he began vomiting and had diarrhea. This was very upsetting to see him sick again. Unfortunately, this happened on a weekend when my vet office is closed. I had to put him on puréed turkey baby food and electrolytes. By the time we got to the vets office on Monday, he was already dehydrated and needed subQ fluids. I am dismayed that a prescription food could cause so much sickness in a dog.

I don’t know what happened to this food, but it’s SUPER soft now and is giving my 9yo American Bully HORRIBLE gas. With such a limited choice in what to feed dogs with pancreatitis, why change this formula???

Same as all the other complaints. My 9 yr old yorkie is popping his brains out… thought maybe it was something he picked up outside or from his buddy… but it has to be from this new formula. Boooooo!

I'd prefer to have a hydrolyzed protein low fat food for my dog, but that doesn't exist. So I'm happy that this food doesn't contain any chicken products.

NOT HAPPY- My beagle has reflux and this was prescribed for her last year. It was great until one day in March of this year, I thought I had received a defective case due to a dramatic change in consistency. Well - the replacement case also arrived with the odd new consistency, so I went ahead and used it. How can you change an EXPENSIVE PRESCRIPTION DIET without any notice? Assuming the ingredients had remained the same, I didn't connect the dots when my dog developed diarrhea because this had been working really well for her. I've been battling her diarrhea with rice and boiled chicken, mixed with this prescribed food which kept it "somewhat" under control, but still with very soft stool since MARCH! 2 weeks ago after starting another case of this food, she declined into explosive diarrhea. She has tested negative for parasites twice and is now on medication to try and stop the diarrhea. I FINALLY came to this review section, among others online retailers' customer reviews, to find MULTIPLE others experiencing the same thing with this same prescribed food. Chicken was replaced with PORK BY-PRODUCT!! Among other changes including an increase in fiber. Might work for some dogs but not mine... and clearly not for many others. How do you change a prescription diet without any notice to the distributor or label alert for the customer? 2 expensive vet bills later, I've been able to get her back to normal with another chicken-based sensitive diet choice. WILL NOT EVER BUY AGAIN.

Our 13.5 year old pup has been on this food for many years and enjoyed it... until now. We can see that the texture has changed and apparently the taste also changed, because the dog now refuses to eat it. It is definitely no longer a loaf - it is more like whipped mush. For some unknown reason, Royal Canin made a stealth change to the formulation of this prescription GI food. Given all the comments from people reporting that their dogs are getting sick from the new formulation, I suppose we should be relieved that our dog would rather starve herself than eat it. We have been worried sick about her not eating and now know that it because Royal Canin changed the food. Please bring back the old formulation.

Thank you, other commenters. I noticed the consistency change and my senior pug immediately suffered with diarrhea. Like others I have purchased this for several years with no issues. Trying to find another product for her digestive issues is a nightmare. She's too old to be going through this. FDA must be warned
