How are Royal Canin diets preserved?

All of our dry diets are preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols, citric acid, and rosemary extract. Our canned diets are naturally preserved and sterilized during the cooking and canning process. 

How can I keep my pet's food fresh?

The best way to keep the product fresh is to store it in the original bag, inside a container, and use within 1-2 months. Since the product is naturally preserved, the longer the product is open, the more the product can oxidize.  We do not recommend freezing the product because that can draw out the moisture in the kibble and upon thawing, it can mold.

Once open, we recommend using the canned product within 48 hours.  Our formulators recommend adding a thin layer of water to the top of the can prior to refrigeration to keep the food moist.  The food that is left out at room temperature should be discarded after 2 hours.

If your pet does not like refrigerated food, try heating it to room temperature by adding warm water.

Where is the Best By date located?

It can be found on the lower half of the front of each bag and on the bottom of each can.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Our goal is to use environmentally friendly packaging wherever possible without sacrificing food quality. We have changed our entire canned product line to recyclable packaging.  Since our dry products are naturally preserved through a specific technology, we are still searching for packaging that will maintain the freshness of the product, while still being recyclable.

Where do the ingredients in Royal Canin diets come from?

We select our ingredients based on multiple factors, including the supplier’s compliance with our quality and food safety requirements, consistent availability, and on the nutrients required to meet the dietary needs of the pet.

Royal Canin is making strides towards sustainability by attempting to obtain sources of raw materials as close to each manufacturing facility as possible. In some cases, we use international suppliers, because only those suppliers can offer raw materials that comply with our quality and food safety standards. 

Why do some Royal Canin diets contain by-products?

Royal Canin chooses ingredients because they deliver high-quality nutrients that support our customized pet food formulas. Using chicken by-product meal instead of chicken meal for example will allow Royal Canin to maintain its highly customized nutrient standards while achieving a more secure and sustainable supply.

Why do some Royal Canin diets contain grains?

Grains can be a healthy part of any cat or dog’s diet. As always, we focus on the nutrients each ingredient provides and grains can provide many important nutrients. If you would like to learn more please follow this link.

How do you ensure Royal Canin diets are safe for my pet?

Our Quality and Food Safety systems are state-of-the-art and we continue to invest heavily in new technology to make sure they remain that way.

  • We put our suppliers through a rigorous selection process that doesn’t end with our first purchase.
  • We monitor every load delivered to our plants to verify the safety and quality of the ingredients we use to make pet food.
  • We perform tests on finished pet foods before they are shipped to our customers.
  • We manufacture every pet food we sell, in plants that we own; our plants are ISO 9001:2008 certified for Quality Management and ISO 22000 certified for Food Safety.

How should I transition my pet from the current diet to a Royal Canin diet?

We recommend at least a 7-day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food. 

How much should I feed my pet? 

Feeding guidelines are provided for each of our diets and indicate the amount to feed per day. We recommend dividing the recommended amount into two or three meals per day. When measuring your pet’s meals use a measuring cup (8 fluid ounces) or a kitchen scale (grams) for accuracy.

How do I know which Royal Canin diet is right for my pet?

Based on size, age, lifestyle, and breed, each cat or dog has unique nutritional needs. For healthy pets, use our Product Selector to find the right diet for your cat or dog.

Can I purchase Royal Canin retail diets directly from you?

ROYAL CANIN Health Nutrition diets are available exclusively in pet specialty stores nationwide. You can search for a pet specialty store in your area by visiting the store locator at the bottom of this page. If your pet store does not have the diet you are looking for, please ask them to order the item for you. 

Can I purchase Royal Canin veterinary diets directly from you?

ROYAL CANIN® Veterinary Diets are available by prescription only. You can search for veterinary hospitals carrying our products in your area by entering your zip code on our store locator page. Please ask your veterinarian about home delivery of Royal Canin diets.

Do you offer coupons or samples of Royal Canin diets? 

We occasionally make special offers available to our customers. We recommend checking with your pet specialty retailer or your veterinarian to determine if there are promotions in your area. Additionally, we recommend that you "like" us on Facebook at Royal Canin USA. If any rebates or promotions become available we will announce them on our page.

What is your return policy?

If you are not completely satisfied with the diet, return it to the pet specialty retailer or veterinary hospital for a 100% refund or an exchange. Please keep the product in the original bag and save your receipt to expedite your return or exchange.
