Why mature and senior cats need tailored nutrition

Subtle changes in your cat’s behaviour could be signs of ageing. Providing tailored nutrition that meets their specific needs at each stage of life is essential to supporting their health and well-being.

7+ Mature stage

At around 7, your cat is mature, and their biological needs start to change. You may not notice any signs of these changes, but with the right diet you can support them with the essential nutrients to continue living their best life.

11+ Senior stage

From 11 years of age, your cat is officially a senior, and moving may not be as easy as it used to be.  This is when you should consider supporting their mobility and joint health with a diet enriched with EPA, DHA, and chondroitin.

15+ Super Senior stage

By 15, your cat is a super senior, and signs of ageing such as dental issues and a loss of appetite may affect how much they eat. Feed them highly palatable, energy-rich meals in easy-to-eat wet and dry textures.

Ageing starts earlier than you think

When your cat reaches 7 years old, you should take them for regular vet check-ups to support their optimal health. Your cat’s needs change with age, even if the signs aren’t obvious. Once your cat officially becomes a senior, we recommend taking them to the vet at least twice a year.

Why mixed feeding is good for ageing cats

As cats age, they may experience more sensitive gums and a decline in their senses, making mealtimes more challenging. To encourage eating, a combination of wet and dry food can support both nutrition and hydration.
To enhance your senior cat’s eating experience, our ROYAL CANIN® Feline Healthy Ageing range offers traditional favourites such as chunks in gravy or jelly textures, alongside our new innovation – an ultra-soft mousse texture.
