Zoos Victoria is a world-leading zoo-based conservation organisation, dedicated to fighting wildlife extinction. Our four zoos are Healesville Sanctuary, Kyabram Fauna Park, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo. Each one provides a unique and immersive experience that attracts visitors from around the world.
Our zoos inspire animal lovers of all ages. And by strengthening the connection between people and wildlife, we hope to protect the future of animals and their homes. Our important work includes breeding and recovery programs; we've built partnerships with local communities, fellow conservationists, and like-minded organisations — close to home and in far-flung corners of the world.
Our goal is to be the world's leading zoo-based conservation organisation.
Zoos Victoria runs and delivers more captive breeding and recovery programs than any other institution within Australia. Our people are passionate and focused on the conservation of our wildlife for future generations.
Zoos Victoria is dedicated to the recovery of 27 threatened native species undertaking significant work and projects to save these species from extinction and fight for a future rich in wildlife.
Zoos Victoria has partnered with Royal Canin to support our work as an official dog food nutritional partner for the Wildlife Detection Dog Program. These dogs are helping to protect some of Australia’s most threatened species.
Zoos Victoria’s Wildlife Detection Dog Program, based at Healesville Sanctuary, trains dogs to assist threatened species biologists to monitor some of Victoria’s most threatened and endangered species, enhancing and complementing current survey methods.
By using their highly sensitive sense of smell, dogs can detect species that are challenging to locate. Our dog squad works with mammal, reptile, amphibian and fungus species.
Zoos Victoria’s detection dog-handler teams locate both live animals and traces, such as scats. Upon locating their target, the dogs alert by sitting and pointing their nose in the direction of the animal or sample. The dogs are trained to search steadily and alert to their target at a distance which ensures the animals are not disturbed.
The Dog Squad focusses on the relationship between humans and dogs forged over thousands of years, and applies the latest scientific advances in animal training, husbandry and welfare.
Our specially selected dogs and their handlers go through extensive training to ensure they are safe and effective when searching in the field and share a strong dog-handler bond. Our squad consists of five dogs named, Moss, Kip, Finn, Daisy and Sugar. To learn more about the team visit the dog squad web page.
